It’s a very wide topic and there are 4 topics that I’m interested which was Air pollution, Carbon footprints, Ocean pollution and Product Waste. So I began to study these topic as to what their related based on SDG. Not to mention, I’m from Malaysia myself so i decided to do my project based on my country.I did my reading and analysis in google for news, articles, reports regarding the topics until I narrowed down to i most interested which is air pollution. These are the first process before making a problem statement and aparently Malaysia is in very bad condition in terms of their health index of air pollution. Major factor of this case was from energy production and consumption sector and transportation. Although, I feel like learning more in depth about transportation sector because i’m very aware of it since i myself contributes it.

From the sector itself it stated that public transport aren’t efficient in Malaysia, There’s no proper connectivity, insufficient rail network, inadequate bus service. Let’s break down the problem;

Lack of proper connectivity : Unconnected routes between all modes of public transport causes different parts of country unreachable (possibly the rural areas)
Insufficient rail service : limited coverage and frequent delays causes long waiting
Inadequate bus service : feeder bus from housing estate are virtually non-existent due to the frequency which causes long waiting.

These factors heavily influence public to rely on their public transport. To put it another way, it fails to meet publics needs. After all this research then I can proceed writing the problem statement and move on to the second step.

Statistical Review

Stats are basically evidence to backup my research with solid proof of problems that occuring is in fact real. These stats are mostly from statista since it is the most accurate. One of the best founding i have was suprisingly, Malaysia is by far the only country with a constant increase in carbon emissions despite being a small country with fitting population. https://datacommons.org/tools/timeline#&place=country/MYS,country/JPN,country/FRA,country/EGY,country/USA,country/NZL&statsVar=Amount_Emissions_CarbonDioxide_PerCapita
You can check all countries carbon emissions annually from this link.

User Interview

Interview is by far the most crucial step because i need to know their opinion, views and struggles they faced with Malaysia public transport. Most of the reason why they decided not to rely on public transport can be trace back to the research. Poor bus service causing them longer journeys, traffic congestions due to massive amount of vehicles on road, Lack of connectivity makes it hard for them to reach their journey. It is possible to rely on public transport but the problem outweighs the benefit too much.

Aside that, I asked them about any solutions as well and they gave me a number of brilliant ideas. I’ve took some of them into consideration and apply it in my app whichever that benefits the user such as adding tickting system and improve schedule and effieciency.

Expert Interview

I had my idea to interview with the Malaysian minister of transportation (Dato’ Anthony Loke) but he didn’t response to my email. So I proceed with my backup plan which is interviewing someone who i looked up to Mr.Adam Hafiz. He’s a student but he is very educated and is famous a Malaysia debater that has participated in numerous championship globally. Best feat of his was back in 2022, he represents Malaysia in the World Championship Debate in Madrid. I looked him up on LinkedIn and saw that apparently he’s in the same college as my friend and I tried asking my friend a favour to approach him. Suprisingly, they are friends and he was willing give is response regarding my project.

Competitor Review

This is a step where i analyze at least 5 app that aids the public in terms of transportation and how are they successfull. It is important to take note what made these app users first choice by understanding their main differentiator that significant stands out from other apps. For example, The app Grab includes other services than ride hailing such as food delivery and parcel delivery.

Personas

I’ve created 3 different personas that possibily would use my app in the future. From these as well I’m able to imagine the purpose of them to use my app and map out their user story.

Value Proposition

This part I’m able to measure how apealing my app would be for the public as to how much benefits it offers to the user and how much solution the app offers.

Problem Statement Project 4 task is based of on UN’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).
